Our story begins in early 1996, when a Newport cabaret band, Mr.
Rigsby, were playing in "Chaplin's" bar. A local booking agent,
Mike Owen, came backstage and told the boys that, although they were fine musicians, there
were so many other bands on the circuit doing the same kind of material with the same kind
of image. With the "tribute" band concept being the latest
innovation, Mike suggested that they should specialise - his own idea being a Garth Brooks
tribute, after hearing Steve play slide guitar on a Dwight Yoakam cover "Fast as
You".
To start with, the band were more than a little miffed at the idea, until one of the
members suggested a general 1970's tribute, covering the entire Glam Rock era and dressing
the part as well - Mr. Glitz was born. They started out just doing one set of Glam Rock,
while retaining the cabaret material for their first set - so as not to scare the
unsuspecting public in social club land.
They retained this format until Mike intervened (again), strongly advising them to drop
the cabaret material altogether. A crash course in new material was promptly
rehearsed and the result has been honed and polished into the dynamic act currently on
offer. There are various other songs that surface when requested like Canned Heat's
"Let's Work Together" and the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" but the
standard set for an evening with Mr. Glitz is outlined below. |
